How is the climate crisis mediated by data? The one-day workshop “Datafication of Climate Change: From Prediction to Participation” at the 2025 Aarhus Critical Computing conference aims to examine the different ways that climate change is becoming datafied. The datafication of climate change refers to the collection, analysis, and representation of data to inform decision-making around strategies for the prevention, mitigation, or adaptation to the impacts of climate change. The increased use of data promises to keep powerful actors accountable for their actions and to enable targeted decision-making necessary for policy analysis. Yet questions remain: what gets made into data, how is it used, for whom, and for what ends?
In this workshop, we argue for moving beyond prediction towards understanding and shaping agendas of climate datafication as novel forms of participation. Climate knowledge is produced by many actors (professional and community/citizen-driven), in many forms, for many goals (prediction/resilience/policy/activism). At the same time, knowledges of the climate has grown from models produced by experts, to include insights from actors outside of formal institutional bounds, such as community-based and citizen-driven efforts.
We welcome submissions from researchers and practitioners working with climate data in HCI, critical computing, design, and related fields to examine and develop practices that encompass climate data. Within this broader overarching goal, we aim to:
